Terms of Service

term (turm) n. 4 [pl.] conditions of a contract, agreement, sale, etc.¹

I have linked to the terms of use pages for some of the top genealogy websites. This list is far from exhaustive. I have listed these so that you will be more aware of the terms of use/service pages that most websites have. Violating a company’s terms of use will not land you in jail but the website could revoke your privileges (probably) or sue you (less likely).  It will also give you a bad name in the genealogy community. One thing to watch out for is when someone asks you to do a lookup for them on a subscription website because you have a subscription and they don’t. Sometimes it’s okay, sometimes it isn’t. Make sure you check.
